About the artist

Born in 1984 and raised in Benin City, with roots in Imo State, Stephen Osuchukwu is a Nigerian artist known for large-scale charcoal works on canvas. He trained at the Auchi school of art, and his practice is devoted to the textures of daily life: markets, mothers, children, tradespeople. His realist drawings stand apart from contemporaries working in conceptual and abstract registers, giving monumental scale to scenes that might otherwise pass unseen. He won the overall prize at the Spanish Embassy art competition in Abuja, which took him to Madrid in 2016, and in 2025 took first place in the live painting competition at the Qatar International Art Festival. His work has been presented at SoulBasel during Miami Art Week and is held through galleries in Nigeria and the United States.
